Single span composite bridge

For bridge spans of up to 50 m, traditional reinforced‑concrete (RC) beam bridges constructed using precast RC beams are generally efficient and cost‑effective. However, they present significant challenges when the alignment requires the bridge to cross a river. Ground investigation within the riverbed can be difficult and may delay the design of the pile foundations. During construction, river diversion or temporary works are often required to create a safe working environment. In service, inspection and maintenance of the pier foundations become necessary, particularly where there is a high risk of scour. Any accidental impact from boats also requires structural assessment of the pier and may lead to costly repairs. To address these issues, and depending on the bridge location and environmental constraints, Cplex has developed two solutions that eliminate the central pier, converting the structure into a single‑span bridge. Removing the in‑river pier provides substantial benefits, including faster construction, reduced temporary works, and the complete avoidance of in‑river maintenance throughout the bridge’s service life.
